Mandatory speed limiters for commercial vehicles?

The EU is considering the implementation of mandatory speed limiters to commercial vehicles, in a bid to reduce carbon emissions. This news comes in the wake of a draft report by the European Parliament, which was leaked to the news agency Reuters.

This has been met with a mixed reaction from Wiltshire-based vehicle tracking firm CMS SupaTrak, whose many clients include transport firms, businesses who would be most affected by the move.

The document outlines proposals which would see the introduction of systems which would prevent vans and small trucks from exceeding 120km per hour (74.6mph). The justification for this, as stated in the report, is that commercial vehicles have no need to exceed this limit. The technology involved in the process is thought to be relatively cheap and can be retro-fitted to most vehicles, making it a convenient solution.

These proposals are the latest in a series of negotiations between the European Parliament and the European Commission on issues surrounding emissions from commercial vehicles. Last year, the commission imposed statutory emission standards on all vehicle manufacturers. This was in a bid to reduce the emission from vans and lorries by almost a third to 135 grams per km by the year 2020. Organisations who fail to meet these standards could be faced with severe fines.

A spokesperson for Swindon-based CMS SupaTrak commented on this news by saying:

“The ongoing legislation governing vehicle emissions is good news for the environment. However, its impact on businesses is as yet unclear. As well as having to potentially fork out for new speed limiting technology, many businesses could fall foul of new emission guidelines, which could see them facing hefty penalties.”

CMS SupaTrak have over 16 years experience in providing vehicle tracking systems to a host of established clients. They have helped organisations from both the public and private sector to make their fleets more fuel efficient and environmentally-friendly.
