Vehicle Telematics Plays an Important Role in Delivery Management
Some businesses rely on time sensitive deliveries in order to survive. These businesses may include anyone within the pharmaceutical supply industry, or medical supply companies amongst others. If deliveries do not reach their intended target on time, people could go without those essential medicines or dressings that they rely on.
Of course, these are just a couple of examples but it does illustrate the point rather well. Imagine you are taking regular medicine and as can be quite often the case these days, they do not hold enough to fulfil the prescription in its entirety. The normal procedure would be for the pharmacist to issue an ‘owing’ slip that the patient would have to call back for or have delivered.
Pharmacies however rely on larger pharmaceutical companies to supply these drugs and medical supplies and in many cases deliver on a daily/twice-daily basis. But, what happens if these crucial deliveries do not arrive on time or are not accurately tracked? Ultimately, the patient may suffer as a result of not receiving their medication.
There are of course other important reasons for tracking time sensitive deliveries, especially when dealing with the medical sector. Pharmaceutical delivery vehicles often carry controlled drugs that are required for medical use but may be kept in check due to their potent nature (some may be prone to abuse). In these cases, the delivery van may fall victim to attack from criminals therefore being able to ensure its whereabouts imperative.
Vehicle telematics goes a long way to address these problems in that it allows a fleet manager to monitor the whereabouts of each and every delivery vehicle in real time. Should a vehicle be delayed or a customer ring in wanting to know where their assigned driver is, then this information can be accessed immediately.
Similarly, should the delivery vehicle or driver become the victim of crime then not only can that driver immediately contact head office and let them know what’s happening but should the vehicle be driven away, its position can be pinpointed and in some cases even disabled. This information can then be relayed to the appropriate authorities and action can be taken.
Vehicle telematics and GPS tracking systems provide an excellent method of keeping a close eye on any vehicle or vehicles that are involved in the delivery of critical or time sensitive items. However, vehicle tracking can be utilised in a whole host of different businesses since it can be just as important to track any item, not just those that may be needed at a specified time.
These are just a few of the uses, vehicle tracking devices can provide business owners but there are in fact many more benefits that can be derived from vehicle telematics systems.
